Skedaddles 3 Steps to Properly Remove Raccoons from a Home

Raccoons sometimes referred to as masked bandits because of their distinctive facial markings, are fascinating animals. They are admired by many for their intelligence and ingenuity but these traits also get them into endless trouble and can make them highly destructive animals.

Raccoons are well adapted to living in urban environments and often make dens in chimneys, roof spaces, and attics. Once a raccoon has moved into your Ajax home it can be a real challenge to remove it and, due to their size and intelligence, they need to be dealt with carefully.

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control has years of experience helping homeowners implement effective raccoon control. We use a well thought out three-step plan to deal with these troublesome animals and prevent future home intrusions.

Step One: Assess and Remove

Raccoons have very manipulative, nimble-fingered paws, which allow them to open jars, garbage cans and even door latches. They are also relatively strong and will rip up shingles, wood, soffit, and flashing, to gain entrance into your home, causing significant damage to your property in the process. Our wildlife technicians will make a home visit to thoroughly assess your property and identify any raccoon damage and potential entry points.

If they find any raccoons on your property, they will safely and humanely remove them, ensuring that all the kits (baby raccoons) are kept with their mother. The kits are removed using a heated baby box and this allows the mother to safely relocate the litter to one of her alternative den sites. Raccoon mothers are very protective of their young and therefore it is essential to remove all kits from the property to prevent the mother from trying to gain re-entry. Removal is the most effective and economical form raccoon control.

Raccoons can leave behind, dirty, damage and disease. Proper clean up is important.

Step Two: Clear and Clean

Once a raccoon has been safely removed from your home, Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control will clear contaminated material and clean affected areas to reduce any health and safety risks. You might think that you can save money by doing the cleaning and clearing yourself but this work needs to be carried out by a professional with the appropriate experience, and cleaning and safety equipment. Raccoon feces are commonly infected with a type of roundworm (Baylisascaris) that can cause serious illness if accidentally ingested and it is important to wear a suitable breathing mask while clearing contaminated areas.

When the affected area has been cleared and cleaned the technician will be able to assess the damage and advise you on any repairs that need to be carried out, like installing new insulation, replacing any frayed electrical wires and fixing structural damage. Carrying out a thorough cleaning as well as the necessary repairs will help ensure that your home remains safe and secure for your family.

Step Three: Prevent and Protect

Effective raccoon control is all about prevention and the third and final step in our raccoon removal process is to ensure that your home is secure from future intrusions. It is no use to remove a raccoon from your home and then not seal up its entry points properly. A Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control Technician will prevent raccoon re-entry into your home by first identifying all potential entry points and then sealing the openings with heavy gauge screens. Our wildlife technicians are well aware of the dexterous paws and determined nature of raccoons and therefore we only use appropriate material to repair damage and seal entry points.

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control has over two decades of experience dealing with troublesome raccoons. We have the skills, knowledge, and equipment to safely remove problem animals from your Ajax home and prevent re-entry. Our wildlife technicians are experts at raccoon control and will ensure that you and your family are protected from even the most determined raccoons out there.
