Winter is a Great Time to Build Your Bat Box for Spring

You might be asking yourself where all the wildlife disappears during winter time, and this is especially true for bats. This happens because, first, they look for a warm and safe place to protect themselves from harsh weather and, second, they hibernate during winter time. It often happens that people’s homes seem like a lovely place to spend the winter. That is why professional bat control services in Ajax are sought after during that time. But if you want to provide the bats with a safe place to roost come spring, a bat box is a great idea. Read on to learn more.

Bat houses provide a great habitat for bats and provide many environmental benefits.

When and Where to Install a Bat Box

To bats, this kind of house represents a shelter where they can roost during the day. Of course, this does not mean that they are ready to exchange the comfort of your home for a bat box. So, in order to properly set it up, it is advisable for you to do this at the beginning of April or at the end of summer. April is a good time since their birthing season has not started yet, while if you set a bat box at the end of summer, you will be preparing it for the following year. When it comes to the location of the box, it should face south or southwest. In this direction, it will receive as much sunlight as possible and maintain an elevated temperature inside. Also, you should install it at least 3 metres above the ground so that predators cannot feast on bats.

Helpful Hints for Successful Bat Boxes

You should avoid placing a bat house near artificial light sources, like street lamps. It is preferable that you paint it black so that the internal temperature is increased. An additional piece of advice would be to use water-based paint instead of the oil-based type. When the house is in use, avoid disrupting the bats. Instead, you can use the opportunity to count the residents- this will give you an insight into how things are going in there and whether you will need an additional bat box or not. What you can also do is make horizontal lines using a saw in order to make it easier for bats to hang on to them.
