Grey Squirrel in a Tree

Backyard Squirrels in Milwaukee Continued: Part 2

We all know that squirrels are among the admired wildlife gifted to us by Mother Nature. Their cuteness is irresistible to many. But they can become quite a nuisance when they occupy your residential space. A little knowledge about the grey squirrel goes a long way in helping to guide the animal control decisions of Milwaukee residents.

A Tail to Behold

This squirrel, nicknamed shade tail because of the way it moves its tail into the position of an umbrella to block out the sun is very popular in the US, especially in the Wisconsin area. This tail also functions as a propeller to launch them really high when they jump. Additionally, the tail is used to slick down the fur when the squirrel gets caught in the rain. As the squirrels sleep they use their tails to cover their bodies and in cold temperatures, they get extra warmth in the process.

The common Gray Squirrel.

Squirrel Damage

Squirrels have 20 teeth but the most prominent of these are the two long and yellowish pairs that extend towards each other. These are what they use to do damage to your property. Your bird feeder won’t catch a break with grey squirrel around. They will raid it daily leaving it empty within minutes.

DIY Gray Squirrel Control Tactics

Over the years homeowners have tried various methods to handle their grey squirrel problems. These methods range from the installation of barbed wires as barriers, moving bird feeders to less accessible locations and installing automatic water sprayers. All these methods fail to create a long-term solution so it will not be long until you’re in need of expert wildlife removal services.

Gray Squirrels-Shrewd Little Animals

Squirrels have large eyes located on the sides of their heads giving them a wide field of vision and are very quick and agile. A 2015 study focusing on grey squirrels revealed that they learn and adapt patterns of behavior quickly. In further research, scientists found that the squirrels deliberately adjusted their behavior to mislead observers. They pretended to stock nuts while they were being observed but later moved them to a secret location when they felt they were safe. Is it any wonder that they are able to evade almost all DIY methods to keep them in check?
