Outrage Over Dead Squirrels in Montreal
Recently, the CBC covered a story in Montreal in which a homeowner took it upon himself to kill multiple squirrels roaming on their property. The traps used in the killing are legal, however, the Montreal SPCA noted that just because a trap is legal, doesn’t mean a person cannot be charged with causing unnecessary harm to an animal.
We are strong advocates for home prevention because this is ultimately where the problem lies. A squirrel is not a nuisance until it’s exploiting the vulnerable areas on your home. Once these areas have been repaired, secured or screened, the squirrels will move on to someplace else.
Simply killing wildlife does not make a home less attractive as a den for them, and until a property is protected against a wildlife intrusion, squirrels, raccoons, bats, and other wildlife will continue to be pests.
Besides, traps like these do little to impact overall squirrel populations in the area. Ultimately, the amount of squirrels in any neighbourhood comes down the amount of available food and shelter. Taking steps to reduce food sources and den sites is a far more effective way to keep your property from being overrun with squirrels.
