Red Squirrel Control Ottawa

This video was shot by one of our technicians in Ottawa while conducting a home inspection for red squirrels. Sometimes a light dusting of snow on a roof can make all the difference when try to determine where and how squirrels are getting into an attic.

The footprints on the roof lead to a gap in the fascia hidden below the shingles. The chew marks on the back of the eavestrough also help to confirm the entry point. Identifying wildlife entry points is one of the first steps in the Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control process.

In cases without the help of foot prints in the snow, it takes the trained and experienced eye of a wildlife control professional to locate where clever red squirrels are getting into an attic.

What are Red Squirrels?

Red squirrels are less commonly found in Ottawa as compared with their gray squirrel cousins and can be distinguished by their reddish fur and smaller size. They’re diet consists primarily of seeds found in conifer trees and that means that tend live in areas of the city with dense concentrations of coniferous, or evergreen trees.

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control has been serving the greater Ottawa region since 1993 and in recent years we have noticed a distinct increase in customer calls related to red squirrels. They seem to be popping up in areas of the city where they weren’t before and in places without dense coniferous forest. It’s as though red squirrels, like many urban wildlife species, have adapted and changed their diets in order to expand their range.

Getting Rid of Red Squirrels

Dealing with red squirrels is often more difficult than solving a gray squirrel infestation. Red squirrels are similar in size to chipmunks and are able to tuck into much smaller holes and gaps and often leave behind little chewing evidence.

Once inside the attic, red squirrels use the space to store the pine cones that form the basis of their diet. They can also do extensive damage to insulation, vapour barriers and electrical wiring.

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control’s technicians perform hands-on removals by entering the attic space and chasing or scaring the red squirrels out through their holes. Once out, it’s critical to secure and repair all actual and future entry points. During the spring and summer birthing season baby red squirrels who are not yet mobile must be removed by hand to be reunited with their outside the house.

Red squirrels that have food stored inside your house are very territorial and persistent in trying to regain access so it’s important to seal all access points properly.
