When inhaled, the potentially fatal virus can be passed on to humans. The disease begins with flu-like symptoms that can take weeks to appear.

SALMONELLOSIS

Salmonella bacteria are often carried inside the intestinal tract of mice. The bacteria may be passed on to humans through food and water contaminated by mouse droppings. Severe forms of the illness are most likely to occur in the elderly, infants and those with weakened immune systems.

LYME DISEASE

Lyme disease is carried by ticks that live on a host of animals including mice, deer, raccoons, squirrels and chipmunks. The disease is spread to humans through the bite from an infected tick. Risk for contraction increases the longer a tick stays attached to the skin. Early signs include skin rash and flu-like symptoms. The disease is treated with antibiotics.
