Bird Prevention Techniques

Bird feedsEvery year birds cause millions of dollars of damage to businesses and homes- but that’s only part of the problem that birds pose. In addition to property damage, there are serious health concerns posed by bird droppings, mite-infested nesting sites and dead birds.

Environmental groups and health care agencies have recognized the significant health risks pest bird can pose, and companies and homeowners that don’t have effective bird control solutions in place are assuming unnecessary and potentially costly risks.

The easiest way to prevent damage to your home, and remove potential health hazards is to quickly remove, exclude and deter birds away from your property.

Possible Damage and Dangers of Birds

Bird StainPigeon, starling and sparrow droppings contain high amounts of corrosive uric acid that can stain and damage building materials. If birds are roosting in or on your home, it takes little time for their droppings accumulate on siding, brick, metal and stone. If left too long, bird feces can cause irreversible damage resulting in costly repairs.

Warm nest sites like chimneys, attics and vents are prime targets for feathered urbanites. Bird nests with or without birds in them are a health and fire safety problem for your home.

Health Concerns Posed by Birds and their Droppings

Pest birds can harbour over 40 types of parasites and host internally 60 types of infectious diseases that can be spread to you, your family, employees and pets when dried bird droppings become airborne.

Exposure to bird roosts and nests that are heavily contaminated with dangerous fungal spores increases the chance of inhalation. Humans are most at risk for infection when dry bird feces become airborne and travel through air vents and opens windows.

Besides being direct carriers of disease, nuisance birds are frequently associated with over 50 kinds of ectoparasites, which can work their way throughout structures to infest and bite humans. About two-thirds of these pests may be detrimental to the general health and well-being of humans and domestic animals. The rest are considered nuisance or incidental pests.

Humane Bird Exclusion Methods:

When it comes to dealing with messy pigeons, starlings and sparrows, exclusion is the most effective control method. Where possible a physical barrier that prevents birds from comfortably roosting and nesting will provide superior results.

Our technicians develop and implement customized bird control measures to protect homes and property.

Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control’s  Wildlife Specialists will often employ a combination of methods, depending on the unique characteristics of the situation, to keep birds out.

  • Galvanized Steel Screening – used to prevent birds from accessing roof and wall vents. Starlings and sparrows easily gain access to unprotected vents. Screening a home’s venting structures prevents birds from nesting while allowing for proper air flow. Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control’s screening won’t rust and stain your home.
  • Wildlife Exclusion Sealant – applied to cracks and crevices to exclude smaller birds from entering attics and soffits. Large gaps between stone exteriors and soffit overhangs provide sparrows with ideal nesting sites. Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control  has worked closely with manufacturers to develop a silicone based sealant that keeps birds out and stands up to severe weather.
  • Bird Netting – stops birds from roosting beneath awnings and overhangs. Pigeons, starlings and sparrows will flock below building overhangs in search of shelter. Professionally installed bird netting systems deny access and can be installed in any architectural configuration. Netting provides lasting protection from droppings in a discreet fashion.
  • Bird Spikes – prevents birds from roosting on ledges, eavestroughs, beams, chimneys and much more. Bird spikes conspicuously and humanely eliminate roosting locations.
  • Bird Wire – a taught wire installed along any flat surface to prevent birds from landing. This product is makes flat surfaces uncomfortable for birds to land on. Discreet design won’t compromise architectural aesthetics.
