Oakville is an excellent place to raise a family. The Halton Region town consistently ranks among the best places in Canada to raise children. When it comes to pest control, many might be surprised to learn that the single family homes found throughout the town are frequently infested with mice. Mouse droppings and nests carry many airborne diseases that can infect your children, partners and pets.
Mice can make you sick.
Diseases such as Hantavirus, salmonella and listeria are commonly found in mouse urine, droppings, saliva and nests. All of these viruses can be deadly to any human.
Found in children and young adults, Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) is a viral infection of the brain and spinal cord. LCM is commonly carried by house mice and pet hamsters. It’s transmitted to people by breathing dried particles of mouse urine, feces or saliva. It can be ingested by airborne particles or contaminated food.
Signs and symptoms for LCM
It’s common for children to never show any symptoms. However, it can also be identified by common flu-like symptoms.
- Nausea
- Cough
- Aching
- Joint or chest pain
- Fever
- Headache
Some of these signs may dissipate after a few days. This is just the initial phase of the infection. These symptoms are usually followed by qualities of meningitis or encephalitis such as stiff neck, drowsiness and confusion.
Diagnosis and treatment
Call your pediatrician once your child has developed flu-like illness after coming into contact with a mouse nest or droppings. Doctors use blood tests to identify the virus. Most children fully recover from an LSM infection. There is no medication proven to scure the condition. Patients will need supportive care or hospitalization in more severe cases.
Signs you have a mouse infestation
- Discovering mouse droppings.
- Noises in walls or attic at night.
- Chewed cardboard, newspaper or clothing.
- Actual mouse sightings. One always means there’s more.
