This spring, you may run across a few different types of wildlife nests. Though you do not need to know the type of animal that created the nest to call Skedaddle Pickering humane animal removal services, many people are curious about what creatures they are dealing with. Here are a few of the common types of nests you may encounter.
Starling Nest
Starlings build their nests in holes and cavities by loosely weaving together twigs, bark, grass, and small pieces of trash. They line the inside of the nests with feathers or moss. These birds generally lay four to six eggs per season, and their eggs are a pale blue. Starlings build their nests between 6 and 60 feet from the ground in areas where the surrounding structure offers protection. They have been known to build nests in the holes of trees and utility poles and around your house against the eaves, on window ledges, or in vents.
Starlings are often persistent once they choose a nesting place, determinedly rebuilding their nests even if you remove them. If the nest they are building is inside your vent, blocks your rain gutter, or is otherwise a nuisance, our animal removal technicians can take care of the problem.
Squirrel Nest
Ground squirrels dig small holes and create their nests underground. Tree squirrels often use two nests per year. They raise their young in a summer nest that they build by weaving together grass, leaves, twigs, bark, feathers, and fur. These summer nests are circular and approximately one-third of a meter long. For winter months, the squirrels move inside a cavity where they will be better protected from the cold and predators. Tree squirrels like their nests to be high above the ground, whether in a tree or your attic. When they are in nature, their summer nests are in the branches of trees and their winter nests are in crevasses within the trunk of a tree. However, when squirrels are on your property, they often feel right at home chewing a small opening into your attic.
Squirrels may have a better public reputation than rats, but they carry disease just as surely as their unloved cousins. Ridding your property of squirrels is more complex than you may think. If you find and seal the entrance into your attic with the mother squirrel inside, she will chew through whatever she needs to in her fight for survival to get back outside to her food source. If the entrance is sealed with the mother outside, she will just as determinedly chew her way back in to get to her babies. The best way to deal with a squirrel nest is to call our animal removal technicians for help.
Rabbit Nest
When rabbit babies, called kits, are small, their mother covers them with grass. She returns to them once to twice per day to feed them until they are big enough to take care of themselves. This nest resembles a clump of dead grass; if homeowners aren’t aware of it, they can easily mow over it. Rabbits can wreak havoc on a nice lawn. They tend to eat plants down to their roots, causing dead patches in your grass. Too much rabbit urine kills plants, which also creates brown or dead patches. In addition to killing your grass, rabbits dig burrows. Putting out poison to try and solve the problem is never recommended as this can seriously harm pets and children. Contact wildlife control experts to have the rabbits safely and humanely relocated.
