The Origin of City squirrels
Squirrels get into some cities because they are physically brought in. This is often done in a bid to provide entertainment for city dwellers. City planners relocate squirrels to their areas because they believe they will appear attractive to people and will amuse them. This was exactly the case in the USA in the nineteenth century when squirrels were taken from rural areas and introduced into the urban cities of Boston, Philadelphia and New York. This is known as an intentional introduction. In some instances, squirrel populations grow in cities after pets or zoo animals escape. Over time, these animals, if they are not recaptured, reproduce and this leads to the establishment of a thriving squirrel population.
