Are Squirrels Active at Night?

Similar to humans, squirrels are most active during the day and retreating to shelter at night where they’ll settle until the next morning. Many household owners are wondering if the sounds coming from their attic during the day come from squirrels or other pests. While the only way to identify the animals that are hiding in your home is to have a professional inspection, there are a couple characteristics unique to squirrels one can use to identify them. One of the biggest dilemmas about squirrels is whether or not they’ll be moving around a home at night.

A Day in the Life of a Squirrel

During the day, squirrels will leave their nests to gather food, stroll, play around and mate. If you’re concerned about noises in your attic late at night, it’s not likely to be a squirrel. Squirrels qualify as crepuscular animals, meaning they become most active during the evening and early morning hours. During the night, squirrels will settle down and spend the night resting in their den.

This does not mean that squirrels are completely inactive at night. They may leave their shelter to eat or drink water, but they are not so active as to produce constant noises. If there are any squirrels in your home, you’ll most likely notice them during the day. This is when they’ll become most active and will start to make noises across your home. Given that the number of pests that could reach your home is limited, if you hear noises coming from your attic in the middle of the day, the chances are a squirrel is the culprit.

If you suspect a squirrel presence in your home, give a call to a professional wildlife control company. Squirrels in a home are a hazard for multiple reasons. They can do some real damage to a home, such as:

  • Bite and chew on the wooden structure of the roof and the attic. Allow this to go on long enough, and you’re risking extensive damage to the roof and ceilings.
  • Contaminate the attic and insulation with urine and feces. As squirrels nest, they can damage the insulation to the point where you’ll need a total replacement.
  • Damage the electrical wiring. Biting and chewing on electric wires in your home could lead to short circuits and or a loss of power. Often times costing you a large amount of money in repairs.
