There are loads of remedies out there to help prevent rodent infestation. But, it’s important to keep things humane. There’s no way you can kill every mouse in your home or neighbourhood. It’s impossible. So what can you do to get rid of mice?
Theories on mouse poison
When it comes to poison it’s always between poison or traps. Both are relatively inhumane ways of removing a mouse infestation. Commercial poisons are designed to terminate pest populations in your home. It seems like an immediate fix. Placing chemicals in high traffic areas attract the rodents. Mice tend to eat pretty much anything. So, the poison appeals as another food source. Once they ingest it they go through a painful death. It’s not only toxic to pests, but also dogs, cats and humans.
Mice can easily avoid poison
They’re sneaky little creatures. The pests easily fit into cramped locations in your home. Sometimes it’s difficult to get the poison to a main infestation. So, leaving poison in places mice don’t regularly go means they may never even find it. Mice can easily avoid any dangerous chemicals. If they have multiple den sites they will move between different locations. Poison in one nest means they’ll move to another one or it may deter them to an alternate part of the house. Mice can also become immune or tolerant to poison, making them useless over time.
Maybe you killed one mouse. You’d be crazy to think that was it though. There are always several rodents in an infestation. Mice rapidly reproduce. Their population can grow by 14 babies at a time up to 10 times a year. There’s no way you can keep up with poisoning a problem that’s growing that quickly, especially when there’s a lag time for the poison to kick in.
There’s also no guarantee that all the mice in your home will eat the poison. The more dominant mice might not share. Let’s say you poison three or four mice, they might die but that won’t solve the issue for long. As long as there are still entry points for mice on your home, others will take their place.
