Bowmanville today exists as a community about 40,000 strong located in the municipality of Clarington, Ontario. It is around 15 kilometres east of Oshawa along Highway 2 and 75 kilometres east of Toronto. Now part of the Greater Toronto Area, Bowmanville was first incorporated as a town in 1858 but later joined the neighbouring townships of Darlington and Clarke in 1974 in order to form the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle was renamed to the municipality of Clarington in 1994, representing a quiet and serene living location with plenty of fun and vibrant attractions.
INTERESTING GEOGRAPHY & HISTORY
Surrounded by rural areas on three sides and Lake Ontario to the south, there’s a harbour to the south of Bowmanville in Port Darlington. North of the community is the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, which hosts both major racing events by NASCAR, SCCA, CASCAR, the United SportsCar Championship and minor grand Prix races annually.
Creeks for water mills, as well as farmland, were the major attractions for settlers to the area. The first water mill was at Bowmanville Creek, still standing at the present-day intersection of Scugog St. and King Street. First purchased by John Burk, the lands which would later become Bowmanville were sold to Lewis Lewis, who opened the first store in what was then called Darlington Mills. In 1824, the store was purchased by Charles Bowman for whom the town was eventually named and then established the first post office.
