Food Around Your Property
As scavengers, raccoons are excellent at finding food sources around your property. If your garbage, compost or other food sources outside your home aren’t completely secured, you may have a few furry paws in them before long. Raccoons like to set up a home near a food source. When your garbage can becomes a convenient place to grab a meal, your attic becomes a hot spot in an up-and-coming neighbourhood. You may quickly have a raccoon in your attic. If you’re particularly unlucky, you may have two or more raccoons engage in a turf war over your dark, cozy attic space. Use raccoon-proof garbage cans and avoid leaving scraps unsecured. Pick up a can that comes with a secure lid or use a bungee cord to fasten the lid on your existing can. Take the same precautions for your compost bin and other food sources.Pet Food and Water
Dog and cat food also looks pretty tasty to a raccoon. When you set dishes outside your home, it won’t be long before a raccoon picks up the scent. These aggressive creatures will fight off pets to grab a few handfuls or the entire dish of food. Just like scraps, a full dish of dog food is a sign to raccoons that they should find a nearby home. Unless you have a particularly aggressive animal on your property, raccoons are unlikely to seek out pet dishes during the day. You should be safe to leave food and water out during the day for your favourite cats and dogs. Just bring the dishes into your home before dusk to avoid feeding the local wildlife.Easy Attic Access
